Confirmed

GTA 6 weather will bring localized rain, persistent puddles and hurricanes to Leonida

GTA 6 will simulate localized, persistent weather across Leonida, including moving cloud systems, rain that leaves wet ground and puddles, and tropical storms and hurricanes. Rockstar’s lighting and rendering lead describes wind, runoff, thunder and lightning affecting the scene around the player. The published evidence establishes an unusually detailed environmental system, but it does not confirm flooding, destructible buildings, mission cancellations or permanent hurricane damage.

Weather can differ from one part of Leonida to another

Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd says the weather technology was re-engineered to be more localized and persistent. Fully dynamic cloudscapes can roll across the map, creating clear conditions in one area while rain develops nearby. That is a production statement about the system’s spatial behaviour; it does not tell us the minimum size of a weather cell or whether players can predict its path.

Rain can leave wet ground, puddles and rainbows behind

Game Informer’s report, as relayed by IGN, says recently showered areas remain wet and can retain puddles after a storm passes. Rainbows can appear under the right lighting conditions. These details matter because the environment remembers recent weather for at least some period instead of immediately reverting when rainfall stops. No duration, drainage model or effect on vehicle grip has been disclosed.

Tropical storms and hurricanes are explicitly named

The Rockstar interview explicitly identifies tropical storms and hurricanes. Shepherd describes heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmosphere and intense rain, with water running from roof edges and lampposts while thunder and lightning illuminate the clouds. This confirms how major storms are represented audiovisually. It does not establish a disaster simulation, evacuation mechanics or permanent environmental destruction.

Wind is designed to affect more than the sky

The system includes offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts and wind occlusion around buildings. Hair and loose debris can swirl on rooftops, gusts can ripple water and swamp grass can bend. Those examples show different assets responding to wind, but they should not be expanded into claims about universal object physics, aircraft turbulence or vehicle aerodynamics without further evidence.

Florida informs the range of conditions

Rockstar’s description ranges from the clear blue skies associated with a Miami winter to tall cumulonimbus clouds and sporadic lightning associated with Florida’s summer and autumn. The comparison explains the visual target and seasonal references used by the art team. It does not confirm an in-game calendar with simulated seasons or a real-world hurricane timetable.

What remains unknown about gameplay

Rockstar has not said how often severe storms occur, whether they arise dynamically during every type of activity, or whether missions and the story acknowledge them. No reviewed source confirms flooded streets, knocked-down trees, building damage, road closures or changes to police and traffic behaviour. Those are reasonable questions raised by the technology, but they remain questions rather than announced features.
