GTA 6 Gameplay Systems: Combat, Driving, Police, Activities and Progression Explained

GTA 6's public gameplay record now extends beyond short trailers: Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look depicts driving, armed encounters, robberies, water travel and leisure across Leonida, while access reports describe a more reactive world, character switching and physical progression. The fine detail—weapon handling, vehicle security, wanted logic, statistics and activity rewards—largely comes from people shown a development build, so it remains reported rather than a final Rockstar specification.

The short answer: familiar GTA pillars, a more reactive design

Rockstar's public material presents Grand Theft Auto VI as an open-world crime game built around Jason and Lucia. Across Trailer 2 and the Extended Look, the company shows vehicles, weapons, robberies, pursuits, interiors, water travel, nightlife and quieter time in Leonida. These are dependable descriptions of what the official footage contains. They do not reveal every input, failure state, mission branch or systemic rule behind the edit.

The more consequential design claim comes from access reporting. Dazed describes a world in which openly carrying a rifle provokes a response and player actions have consequences; it also reports that Jason and Lucia can be used independently or switched during a journey and pursuit. TGG, an invited creator, describes a Rockstar North demonstration covering interface, combat, vehicles, police, money and side activities. These accounts align around a less consequence-free sandbox, but they are not equivalent to a public hands-on preview.

That distinction governs this guide. Confirmed means Rockstar states something or its official footage plainly depicts it. Reported means a named writer or preview participant says they witnessed a feature in a development build. Analysis explains the likely design significance without pretending to know final balance. Rumor covers claims from leaks, anonymous posts or unsupported extrapolation; no such claim is used here to complete a missing specification.

Combat and weapons: what is shown, and what is only reported

Armed robberies, handgun and long-gun use, firing from vehicles and confrontations with police or criminal opponents appear across Rockstar's official videos and screenshots. The Extended Look gives these actions more continuity than the trailers, making third-person shooting and cover-oriented encounters part of the public record. An image of a weapon or a shot landing still cannot establish recoil values, damage models, enemy intelligence or the number of weapons a protagonist may carry.

TGG's detailed breakdown of the demonstration reports a health bar and a Focus resource, multiple hit-marker states, shoulder switching and optional cinematic kill or crash cameras. He also says the build moved away from the familiar automatic lock-on presentation. These are unusually specific first-hand claims, and TGG attributes parts of his explanation to conversations with Rob Nelson and Rockstar staff. They remain reported because the audience cannot inspect the demonstrated build and Rockstar has not published those rules as a feature sheet.

Analysis: clearer hit feedback and a separate Focus resource could make gunfights more legible while asking the player to manage an ability beyond health. A stricter aiming model could also change difficulty substantially. None of that tells us how accessibility assists, controller settings, difficulty levels or mouse input will work. Claims about dual wielding, a fixed two-weapon limit, dismemberment, stealth depth or a Red Dead Redemption-style Dead Eye mode should be treated as unverified unless a cited source demonstrates the exact behaviour.

Traversal and character switching: movement across Leonida

The official footage depicts movement on foot and travel by cars, motorcycles, boats and personal watercraft across urban roads, causeways, beaches and wetlands. Those categories are safer than an exhaustive vehicle list: a vehicle appearing in a trailer confirms its representation, not necessarily that every visible passenger can drive it freely or store it permanently. Aircraft, underwater exploration and other traversal claims need the same shot-by-shot discipline.

Dazed supplies the clearest attributable description of switching between Jason and Lucia. Its example begins with Jason driving while Lucia uses the in-game phone, then describes changing roles during a car chase so the player can drive in one moment and fire from the passenger seat in another. The article also describes the pair riding a jet ski together. This is access-based reporting tied to a named publication, not proof of unrestricted switching everywhere or during every mission.

Analysis: switching roles inside a moving vehicle could make the two-protagonist structure more mechanically meaningful than selecting a character between distant activities. It may support coordinated robberies and different viewpoints during travel. Yet transition speed, restrictions, artificial-intelligence control of the other protagonist, mission-specific locks and what happens when the pair are far apart are all unknown. Trailer edits cannot fill those gaps.

Vehicles: theft, handling, storage and damage

Cars remain central to the way Rockstar presents GTA VI. Official footage shows ordinary traffic, performance cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and chases, while Rockstar's current product page advertises edition-specific vehicles and customization. Those product listings prove that named bonus vehicles and at least some customization exist in the sold editions; they do not define the baseline handling model or make every marketing vehicle available in every edition.

TGG reports that vehicle theft in the demonstrated build involves more friction than simply entering any parked car. His accounts describe smashing a window or using tools such as a slim jim, with some newer vehicles allegedly requiring different access equipment; separate reporting from the same preview testimony discusses trackers, fencing stolen cars, customization, storage and recovery. Because these details come from one participant's recollection and follow-up videos, this guide treats them as a connected body of testimony rather than independent corroboration.

Dazed adds a useful development detail: it says Rockstar's vehicle-handling team includes race-car drivers. That supports the claim that handling receives specialist attention, but it does not establish a simulation model. Analysis: security tools and vehicle provenance could turn theft into preparation and risk management, while persistent storage could make individual cars more valuable. Fuel consumption, charging obligations, insurance, permanent destruction and exact handling differences remain reported or unknown rather than confirmed universal rules.

Police and the wanted system: reaction is supported, exact logic is not

Police raids, patrol vehicles and pursuits appear in Rockstar's trailers and Extended Look, confirming law enforcement as part of the depicted world. Dazed goes further, reporting that walking through the city with a rifle will prompt a reaction and that players spending extended time on the run can show physical consequences. Its account frames the wider world and non-player characters as more responsive to what the player does.

TGG's preview testimony describes changes to how witnesses, police searches and escalation work, while later creator and specialist coverage has attempted to reconstruct the system. The responsible conclusion is limited: an invited viewer reports a more contextual law-enforcement response in the build he saw. Rockstar has not published a complete wanted-level table, dispatch model, witness timer, arrest procedure, search radius or proof that officers permanently remember every crime.

Analysis: making visible weapons and public behaviour matter could move the series away from a simple star meter toward managing suspicion, identification and escape. It could also constrain the spontaneous chaos associated with GTA, which is why final tuning matters. Rumor / unknown: claims that licence plates are always scanned, disguises erase identity, police use a specific artificial-intelligence architecture, or every witness can call authorities are not confirmed here. The retail game's response ranges and exceptions remain open.

Activities and world interaction: a broad official canvas, detailed preview claims

Rockstar's footage depicts beaches, clubs, boating, jet skis, off-road travel, exercise and wildlife alongside story crime. It is reasonable to say Leonida is presented as a place for recreation as well as missions. It is not reasonable to turn every background action into a promised minigame. A character lifting a weight proves that the animation and scene are represented; only continuous interaction, explicit copy or access testimony can support a claim about player control and rewards.

TGG's September 3 account says Rob Nelson demonstrated gyms, sleep, fishing, hunting, basketball and racing, and described those activities as connected to health, stamina, Focus, body condition or the relationship between Jason and Lucia. iGrandTheftAuto.com's structured report is useful for locating this testimony but summarises the same source, so it is not independent confirmation. The build was demonstrated before launch, and individual activities, rewards or names can change.

Dazed independently reports the broader physical systems: food changes Jason and Lucia's weight, exercise builds and tones muscle, and prolonged time away from bed can alter their appearance. That corroborates the existence of body-state consequences at a high level without verifying every statistic in TGG's account. Analysis: if leisure, physical condition and relationship state feed one another, activities may serve progression rather than sit as disconnected diversions. Full golf, tennis, dedicated parachuting challenges and every fan-compiled activity list remain unconfirmed.

Progression, Focus, money and the reported Criminal Profile

The official videos do not provide a complete progression screen or economy manual. Dazed reports that choices can affect Jason and Lucia's relationship and that physical habits alter their bodies. TGG reports separate health and Focus values, improvements earned through activities, cash and banked money behaving differently, and a system he calls Criminal Profile. These claims describe a build shown under controlled access; they should not be presented as immutable launch rules.

According to TGG, Criminal Profile is not simply Red Dead Redemption 2's morality meter transplanted into GTA. He describes it as tracking the quality or style of criminal behaviour, with information shown separately for Jason and Lucia rather than as a conventional visible bar. His follow-up discussion also describes relationship status and actions that can strengthen the pair's bond. The labels and examples are reportable because the participant names what he says he saw and heard, but Rockstar has not issued a public specification.

Analysis: a criminal-competence layer could let reckless failures, clean jobs and preparation influence more than a wanted level, while separate protagonist states could reinforce role-playing. A relationship system could make shared activities and story choices mechanically relevant. Rumor / unknown: exact profile ranks, a permanently broken save-state, all consequences for narrative outcomes and every method of increasing stats are not independently established. Readers should not mistake a creator's interpretation of UI and developer conversation for a guaranteed branching-story matrix.

What Rockstar has not confirmed about GTA 6 gameplay

No reviewed first-party source supplies the final control layout, accessibility suite, difficulty modes, artificial-intelligence specification, inventory capacity, economy balance, complete activity list or mission count. Rockstar has not publicly defined save rules, fast travel, fail states, arrest penalties, permanent vehicle ownership, fuel requirements, stealth systems or how much freedom exists during story missions. Online play is a separate subject and should not be inferred from the single-player presentation.

The Extended Look's PS5 capture disclosure is evidence about the source of the presentation, not proof of a shipping frame rate, response time or identical behaviour on every console. Likewise, an invited demonstration may use prepared saves, controlled routes and a build months away from certification. Preview testimony can be accurate and still describe an interface, tuning value or feature that changes before November 19, 2026.

The next meaningful evidence would be an official systems guide, unedited developer walkthrough, hands-on preview with disclosed build conditions, final review access or retail testing. This page will update claims prospectively while preserving their earlier status: a reported mechanic becomes confirmed only when Rockstar documents it or the released game can be independently checked. Until then, the most defensible picture is a recognisable GTA sandbox pursuing greater consequence, physicality and connection between its systems—not a finished checklist of every rumoured mechanic.

  • Confirmed by Rockstar: in-game PS5 footage depicts driving, combat, robberies, police activity, water travel and leisure across Leonida.
  • Reported by Dazed: reactive NPCs, weapon visibility consequences, protagonist switching, relationship choice and body-state changes.
  • Reported by TGG: detailed HUD, combat feedback, vehicle security, police behaviour, statistics, activities and Criminal Profile in a demonstrated build.
  • Analysis: these systems appear designed to connect crime, character condition and relationships more tightly than a list of standalone minigames.
  • Rumor / unknown: exhaustive mechanics lists, leaked-build claims, final balance, exact controls and online carry-over are not established.

How the public gameplay evidence developed

  1. Trailer 1 establishes the activity range

Rockstar's first trailer depicts road traffic, boats, motorcycles, wildlife, police activity, nightlife and social-video culture. It establishes situations and tone, not a control scheme or complete feature list.

  2. Trailer 2 adds a capture disclosure

Rockstar says the trailer was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 and combines equal parts gameplay and cutscenes. The disclosure identifies provenance while leaving individual shots and final systems to be interpreted cautiously.

  3. The Extended Look broadens the official record

The 26-minute presentation shows longer sequences of movement, driving, combat, crime and leisure. Rockstar calls it entirely in-game PS5 footage, but it remains an edited publisher demonstration rather than hands-on public access.

  4. Invited viewers begin publishing accounts

TGG says he watched Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson play for roughly three hours and reports details about the HUD, economy, vehicles, police and progression. Those observations concern a development demonstration and are attributed accordingly.

  5. Dazed publishes its Rockstar access feature

Dazed reports on a reactive world, protagonist switching, social feeds, relationship choices and physical change, supported by named Rockstar interviews. It is strong access reporting, not a retail-build review.

  6. Current evidence boundary

Rockstar has shown the broad gameplay pillars but has not released a public demo, complete manual, final control map, difficulty specification or exhaustive activity list. Detailed implementation remains provisional until first-party documentation or independent play.
