GTA 6 reaches record 29% US purchase intent, Circana reports
GTA VI has set a record before release, but it is a measure of intent rather than copies sold. In an October 28 statement, Circana says 29% of US console and PC gamers intend to buy the game, the highest reading for a title in its PlayerPulse tracking history. The result gives the launch’s enormous visibility a measurable context, without telling us how many people will actually purchase it.

What the 29% figure measures
Circana’s [announcement, distributed through GlobeNewswire](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/10/28/3390533/0/en/nearly-1-in-3-u-s-console-and-pc-gamers-plan-to-buy-grand-theft-auto-vi-setting-a-new-industry-record-circana-reports.html), identifies the audience as US console and PC gamers. It is not a survey of every American, every smartphone player or the worldwide population. The record is also bounded by Circana’s own tracking history, rather than every study ever conducted about a game. The public release does not give the sample size, fieldwork dates, question wording or margin of error. Those omissions limit the comparisons readers can make. We cannot use this short announcement to calculate a reliable worldwide unit forecast or identify which age group is driving the result.
Intent is not a pre-order receipt
Someone can want to buy GTA VI while waiting for reviews, a console purchase, a discount or a later opportunity to play. A statement of purchase intent therefore does not establish either payment or timing. Multiplying 29% by an unrelated estimate of the gaming population would create an apparent sales total that Circana has not reported here. The inclusion of PC gamers also says something about the research audience, not the launch platforms. A person can play on more than one device. This survey does not announce a PC version or a release date for one; the announced launch remains on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Why retailers are watching more than software
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella expects demand to extend to consoles, accessories and subscriptions as players prepare for release. He suggests that some people who have not upgraded could buy current-generation hardware specifically for GTA VI. These are forward-looking expectations, not measured hardware sales caused by the game. That distinction matters alongside our earlier PS5 sales report. Interest in a future launch and the explanation for a particular month’s console growth are different questions. This new survey should not be used to retrospectively attribute every PS5 sold to Rockstar.
What will make the next update meaningful
The useful comparison after launch will be between anticipation and reported buying behaviour, with the territory, period and measurement method kept clear. A publisher shipment announcement, a retailer sales estimate and a player survey are not interchangeable statistics. For now, the finding is substantial on its own: GTA VI is generating an exceptional level of stated demand in Circana’s US tracking. There is no need to turn that into an invented pre-order total to explain why the industry is paying attention.
