Rockstar says GTA 6 will sacrifice realism when simulation becomes tedious
GTA 6 is not pursuing realism at any cost. Co-director Rob Nelson says simulation should reinforce immersion, but Rockstar simplifies or removes systems when they become tedious. A previously translated Famitsu interview supplies a concrete example: the team tested buying groceries and restocking a refrigerator, then cut the routine while keeping food, fitness and character-condition systems that affect play.
SOURCE IMAGERealism has to justify the player's time
Numerama reports Nelson's position that realism supports immersion only up to the point where it becomes tedious. The useful part of that statement is the test it creates for a feature. A simulated action is not automatically better because it has more steps. Rockstar can retain the consequence while reducing the routine needed to reach it. That approach is compatible with a detailed world and with a game designed to remain readable during long sessions.
The grocery system Rockstar decided not to keep
In iGrandTheftAuto's translation of Famitsu's interview, Nelson describes an experiment in which players could buy groceries and place them in a refrigerator. The team found the process too complicated and removed it. This is unusually concrete evidence of Rockstar cutting a plausible simulation feature rather than treating every researched activity as mandatory. It also warns against interpreting early experiments as final promises.
Food still matters without refrigerator management
The same translated interview says food can provide benefits and that health, cardio and fitness are tracked. Rockstar therefore appears to have separated the meaningful outcome from the domestic administration surrounding it. The article does not document every buff or menu, and the wording comes through a translated interview, but it supports a system in which eating affects the character without forcing the player to maintain a complete kitchen inventory.
Exercise and physical condition remain part of the design
The Famitsu translation also describes gym exercise, sets, stamina and physical changes including gaining muscle or weight. Nelson reportedly used repeated workouts and protein products as examples. Those details indicate that Rockstar is still interested in visible and mechanical character condition. They do not prove that GTA 6 reproduces San Andreas stat progression exactly, nor do they reveal how quickly changes occur or what penalties apply.
What this philosophy does not confirm
A balance between realism and convenience cannot confirm fuel consumption, mandatory sleep, weapon cleaning or any other frequently requested system. Each feature needs its own evidence. Nelson's comments are most valuable as a filter for future claims: Rockstar is willing to build detailed simulations, test them and remove the parts that make the game feel like maintenance rather than crime, exploration or character development.
