Inside Rockstar's Miami research: 50 street artists, local fashion and race drivers shaping GTA 6

A new synthesis of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look has returned attention to one of the most substantial primary interviews released during the launch campaign. Speaking directly to Dazed, senior Rockstar developers described years of fieldwork in Miami, a local research team, more than 50 street artists contributing murals, a Miami stylist designing an in-game fashion ecosystem and race drivers working on vehicle handling. Those details are confirmed as production inputs; they are not a guarantee that every interpretation of the footage will survive into the final game.

A research team embedded in Miami

Rockstar writer Michael Wiafe told Dazed that the studio wanted to move beyond easy Florida stereotypes. Senior narrative executive Rupert Humphries described meetings with former criminals, law-enforcement personnel, club promoters, gun dealers and other local figures, while senior art director Jamie-Lee Lloyd said first-hand context helped the team identify the visual markers of the communities it wanted to represent. Dazed reports that Rockstar groups have visited Miami and its surroundings for years and that a dedicated research team is based in the city.

More than 50 street artists contributed to Leonida

According to Dazed, Rockstar brought more than 50 real street artists into production to create murals for areas including Stockyard, the game's district influenced by Miami's Wynwood. This is a concrete production detail, not a count of every artwork that will appear at launch. It nevertheless shows how Rockstar is using many outside hands to avoid treating local street art as a single repeated texture or a generic visual shorthand.

A Miami stylist built a fashion ecosystem

Miami stylist Jillian Carr told Dazed she has worked with Rockstar since 2023 on an in-game fashion ecosystem built around taste, lifestyle, affluence and individuality. The interview connects clothing to neighbourhood, social status and occasion. Rockstar also says it developed new tools and pipelines for what it calls its most detailed and varied character population, but that description remains the studio's own assessment until the finished game can be tested.

Race drivers are part of the vehicle-handling team

Dazed states that the team responsible for GTA VI's vehicle handling includes professional race-car drivers. GTA BOOM argues that their influence can be read in the weight transfer and acceleration shown in the Extended Look. The first point is directly sourced; the second is an interpretation of promotional footage. It would be premature to call GTA VI a simulation or to infer final handling settings before release.

Bodies and habits are designed to reflect play

The Rockstar interview also confirms the return and expansion of systems that alter the protagonists' appearance. Dazed reports that food can affect Jason and Lucia's weight, exercise can build and tone muscle, and prolonged time away from bed — including police pursuits or multi-day benders — can visibly affect them. These are more specific than general claims about immersion because they were described directly by the developers, although their exact limits and gameplay balance remain unknown.

What is confirmed, and what remains interpretation

The existence of Miami fieldwork, the dedicated research presence, the street-artist collaboration, Carr's styling role and race-driver participation all come from direct interviews. Claims about how realistic driving will feel, how autonomous crowds will behave or whether every observed detail represents a player-facing system are not equally established. The useful takeaway is about Rockstar's production process: Leonida is being built through local observation and specialist input, not that every frame proves a final feature.
